If you've ever stood in front of the Cannibisters menu feeling slightly overwhelmed, you're not alone. Indica, sativa, hybrid, landrace, living soil — there's a lot going on. Once you understand the basics, choosing your next strain becomes a lot more intuitive.
The short answer: Indica is traditionally the body high — relaxing, sedating, good for evenings. Sativa is the head high — uplifting, cerebral, good for daytime. Hybrids cross the two and make up most of what you'll actually smoke. But the label matters less than the terpene profile, which is what really shapes how a strain feels. Cannibisters lists terpene information on product pages so you can choose on more than a colour-coded category.
Indica: The Body High
Indica strains are your classic "in-da-couch" varieties — yes, the name thing is intentional. They're associated with deep physical relaxation, a heavy body sensation, and a generally sedative effect. Good for slowing everything down.
Expect deep muscle relaxation, calming effects, and sweet, earthy or fruity flavours. They're great for evenings, sleep, pain, and anxiety. If you want to do absolutely nothing productive and feel great about it, indica is your friend.
Our best-selling indica is Watermelon Punch. Other good starting points from our range: Blunicorn, Blood Bath, Purple Panda, Grandpa's Endgame.
Sativa: The Head High
Sativa strains are the opposite energy. Uplifting, cerebral, creative. Think of them as a cup of good coffee — smoother and considerably more interesting.
They're your daytime strains. Uplifting and euphoric in the mind, energising without the jitters, social and conversational. The terpene profiles tend towards citrus, pine and herbal. Good for creative work, a walk up Lion's Head, or any situation where you want your brain switched on rather than off.
Our best-selling sativa is Alien Mints — also our best-selling flower overall. Others from our range: Durban Poison, African Dream, Green Crack, Amnesia Haze.
Hybrid: Most of What You'll Actually Smoke
Hybrids are crosses between indica and sativa genetics, and they make up the bulk of modern cannabis. Most lean one way or the other (indica-dominant or sativa-dominant), so it's worth paying attention to the specific strain's terpene profile rather than just the label.
They're versatile. Day or night appropriate depending on the strain, often complex terpene profiles, and great for people who don't want to commit hard to either end of the spectrum.
Our best-selling hybrid is LA Rosa, a true 50/50. Others from our range: Pancake McFlurry, Bubble Velvet, Forbidden Fruit, Lemon Cherry Gelato.
Why the Indica/Sativa Label Isn't the Whole Story
Here's the thing: the indica/sativa/hybrid framework is a useful starting point, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Modern genetics are so intertwined that many "sativas" can be sedating and many "indicas" can be uplifting. The label matters less than it used to.
What actually shapes your experience are terpenes — the aromatic compounds in cannabis that determine how a strain smells, tastes and feels. A strain high in myrcene (earthy, musky) tends to be more relaxing. One high in limonene (citrusy) tends to be more uplifting. Pinene (piney) is associated with alertness and focus.
We list terpene information on our product pages because we think you should know what you're actually consuming, not just be handed a colour-coded label and sent on your way.
How Do I Choose Between Them?
| Ask yourself | What it points to |
|---|---|
| When are you smoking? | Morning or afternoon leans sativa. Evening or night leans indica. Flexible means hybrid. |
| What do you want to feel? | Relaxed, energised, creative, social — or completely knocked out. |
| What's your tolerance? | New to cannabis? Start lower-THC regardless of type. |
| What flavour do you like? | Sometimes you just smell something and know. |
Still lost? That's genuinely what our team is here for. Every Cannibisters member can get a strain consultation and we'll sort you out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between indica and sativa?
Traditionally, indica is more body-focused and sedating while sativa is more cerebral and energising. In practice the terpene profile predicts the effect better than the category does.
Is indica or sativa better for sleep?
Indica-dominant strains, particularly ones led by myrcene or linalool, are the usual choice for sleep.
Is indica or sativa better for anxiety?
It varies by person. High-THC sativas can worsen anxiety for some people; a balanced hybrid or a CBD-forward option is often gentler. Ask us and we'll match you from current stock.
What does hybrid mean?
A cross between indica and sativa genetics. Most modern strains are hybrids, leaning one direction or the other.
What is your best-selling strain?
Alien Mints, a sativa, is our best-selling flower overall. Watermelon Punch leads the indica side and LA Rosa the hybrids.
